Project Description

Pragmatic Professional Engineers delivered comprehensive fire protection engineering and design services for five strategically located Costco facilities across California. This project included four ground-up builds in Napa, Natomas, Pleasanton, and Riverbank, along with a significant remodel/addition at the Chino Hills site.

Our engineering team developed and implemented advanced fire protection systems to meet the diverse operational demands of large-scale retail and storage environments. Each system was meticulously tailored to address specific risk profiles, ranging from tire storage to climate-controlled cold storage areas.

Key project elements included:

  • Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) System: In the tire storage areas, Pragmatic PE implemented custom-engineered ESFR systems designed to deliver high-density discharge at 0.60 gpm/sq.ft., ensuring rapid fire suppression in high-risk zones. The system configuration prioritized hydraulic efficiency and seamless integration with existing infrastructure.

  • Dry Pipe Systems: To address fire risks in exterior canopies and subfreezing conditions, our team designed and installed dry pipe systems optimized for reliable performance and robust fire suppression. Hydraulic calculations ensured sufficient flow rates while maintaining stringent California Fire Code compliance.

  • Diesel Fire Pump Design: Tailored diesel-driven fire pumps and dedicated fuel storage tanks were designed and calibrated to provide critical fire flow for each site, reinforcing fire system resilience during emergency scenarios. Each pump assembly was configured to handle high-demand suppression systems, sustaining operational continuity in the event of fire emergencies.

  • Cold Storage Protection: Cold storage areas required specialized dry pendent sprinklers strategically positioned to maximize thermal sensitivity and maintain consistent coverage. The system was engineered to mitigate fire risks effectively, achieving optimal discharge density while protecting temperature-sensitive assets.

Throughout the project, every system was rigorously engineered to adhere to the 2019 and 2022 California Fire Code, prioritizing life safety and operational integrity. From hydraulic calculations to pump sizing, each component was meticulously designed to deliver reliable, code-compliant fire protection tailored to the specific needs of each Costco site.
