Project Description
GreenWaste required expanded storage capacity, which necessitated the removal of existing office space within their facility. Pragmatic Professional Engineers (Pragmatic PE) was engaged to provide comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering services to support the new operational requirements while ensuring full compliance with applicable California codes and standards.
This project also presented dynamic challenges, as the client’s needs, budget, and vision evolved over time due to shifting operational and economic priorities. Our team remained highly responsive throughout, delivering customized engineering solutions that adapted in real-time to support the project’s success.
Mechanical Engineering
Assessed existing HVAC system performance in the context of changing spatial usage and ventilation requirements.
Implemented targeted system modifications to maintain airflow and climate control in the reconfigured layout.
Reviewed and verified HVAC equipment capacity against both current load conditions and anticipated future demands.
Collaborated closely with project stakeholders to realign mechanical designs with revised space utilization plans and client expectations.
Electrical Engineering
Pragmatic PE reconfigured the existing electrical systems to support significant tenant improvements. Our approach balanced immediate functional needs with long-term efficiency and compliance:
Demolished outdated lighting and power outlets to accommodate new warehouse storage configurations.
Designed and specified a disconnect switch for a new freight lift, enabling safe and code-compliant vertical transportation.
Delivered a code-compliant electrical solution that met the evolving functional and safety requirements of the facility.
Maintained flexibility to support design changes while ensuring full compliance with the California Electrical Code (CEC).
Lighting Design
Replaced outdated fluorescent fixtures with new linear LED lighting and energy-efficient LED exit signage to comply with Title 24.
Integrated 90-minute battery backup drivers for emergency lighting, ensuring operational safety.
Modified lighting plans in coordination with evolving layout changes while preserving compliance and efficiency.
Electrical Load Analysis & Compliance
Performed comprehensive load calculations considering both existing use and potential future expansion.
Ensured design compliance with Title 24 lighting standards and PG&E Greenbook guidelines, even as space usage plans shifted mid-project.
Plumbing Engineering
Conducted a detailed review of existing plumbing systems to determine required rerouting based on revised interior plans.
Provided recommendations to upgrade or reconfigure plumbing infrastructure to match new fixture placements and usage requirements.
Ensured all modifications complied with California Plumbing Code (CPC), even as project scope and configuration evolved.
Worked closely with facilities personnel to ensure water efficiency goals and functional requirements were met under updated project constraints.
Results & Impact
Through flexible engineering, responsive project management, and deep code knowledge, Pragmatic PE delivered an MEP solution that aligned with GreenWaste’s operational evolution and long-term goals.
As the client navigated shifting priorities — from storage strategy to budget considerations — our team adapted proactively, offering design modifications, infrastructure upgrades, and permit-ready documentation that ensured continuous progress without sacrificing quality or compliance.
This project showcases our capacity to partner with clients through complex transitions, delivering thoughtful, scalable, and regulation-compliant systems under real-world constraints.
