Project Description
Western Digital’s Fremont facility needed to pivot from legacy laboratory space to a mission-critical command center—demanding precision engineering, energy compliance, and uninterrupted workflow. Pragmatic PE delivered a future-ready environment supporting Western Digital’s operational goals.
Scope of Work
Pragmatic PE provided a turnkey upgrade, delivering both mechanical and electrical engineering services:
Mechanical: New reheat coils, ductwork, and linear diffusers were installed for precise temperature control and comfort, with designs tightly coordinated with architectural lighting layouts. Old ductwork was removed and reconnected to the existing system. Load calculations ensured right-sized heating and cooling, and new process piping delivered Nitrogen, compressed dry air, and process vacuum to the space. All solutions were Title 24 compliant, supporting energy efficiency.
Electrical: Outdated lab power and lighting were replaced with sleek LED fixtures and smart distribution to support the command center’s needs. Close coordination with Western Digital ensured every new electrical load was accounted for. System calculations confirmed the existing infrastructure’s capacity. Lighting design and controls complied fully with Title 24, meeting California’s stringent energy standards.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge: Converting specialized lab infrastructure to a technology-forward command center required thoughtful demolition and selective re-use of existing systems.
Solution: Pragmatic PE’s integrated MEP approach ensured old systems were efficiently removed, new solutions were seamlessly tied in, and the overall design elevated both function and aesthetics.
Challenge: Tight energy efficiency and Title 24 compliance standards.
Solution: Upfront calculations, advanced controls, and high-performance lighting and HVAC enabled regulatory compliance and long-term operating savings.
